A Strategy for Reading Textbooks

Taking Notes in Class

In classes, your teachers will talk about topics that you are studying. The information they provide will be important for you to know when you take tests. You must be able to take good written notes from what your teachers say.

Taking good notes is a three-stage process in which there are certain things you should do before class, during class, and after class. Here are the three stages of notetaking and what you should do during each stage.

1. Get Ready to Take Notes (Before Class)

• Review your notes from the previous class session before you come to class. This will help you remember what was covered and get you ready to understand new information your teacher provides.
• Complete all assigned readings before you come to class. Your teacher will expect that you have done this and will use and build upon this information.
• Bring all notetaking materials with you to class. Have several pens and pencils as well as your notebook.

Skimming and scanning are reading strategies that can assist a reader in getting specific information from the text.

Skimming is high-speed reading that can save you time and help you get through lots of material quickly. It is different from other kinds of high-speed, such as previewing and scanning. You skim to get the general sense of a passage or book, not specific details. When you skim, you have a general question about the whole text, such as “What is this writer’s opinion?” or “what is the writer’s purpose?” Skimming involves going through the book page by page just looking at chapter titles and sub titles and categories and pictures and diagrams to get a general feel for the text. Always read the first and last paragraphs of sections of text to get summaries of the whole text.

Scanning is very high-speed reading that you do when you are looking for a specific piece of information. You can only scan for portions that interest you. We usually scan when we know exactly what information is needed and we know where to look to find it. When you scan, you have a question in mind. You do not read every word, only key words that will answer your question. The purpose of scanning is to just simply know what the passage is talking about. Practice in scanning will help you learn to skip over unimportant words so that you can read faster.

Many ideas in this handout are from a lecture by Dr. Lee Haugen, former Reading Specialist at the
ISU Academic Skills Center

For many of you, reading at the college level is an entirely new experience.  You've been reading for 12 years or more in school and for pleasure, but academic reading can be overwhelmingly difficult for those whose skills are less than excellent.  In K-12 reading, the focus is often on the concrete aspects of the text, the facts, what is easily visible on the page, and writing about reading requires only that you regurgitate basic information.

College reading, on the other hand, requires meta-cognition, the ability to orchestrate your own learning.  You need to think about how your learning style interacts with the text you are reading, and perhaps change your reading strategies to meet the challenges of that text.

There are four variables to be considered when learning how to read more successfully: the reader, the text, the strategies, and the goal.  Characteristics of the reader include reading skills, interest in the topic, physical factors such as sleepiness or hunger.  The text varies in type (novel, science, play, psychology, etc.) and difficulty.  Some reading is easy and moves along quickly, while other reading is quite dense and perhaps even tedious, packed with information.  The next factor, strategies employed by the reader, makes all the difference.  The goal of this handout is to give you a larger repertoire of reading strategies, to help you read less and get more out of it.  The final consideration is the purpose.  Why are you reading this text, and what do you want to get out of it?

انگیزه

چه چيزي براي فراگيري صحيح زبان لازم است؟

شايد شما همه‌ي نکات فراگيري زبان را بدانيد، ولي اگر آنها اجرا نکنيد، چيزي زيادي ياد نخواهيد گرفت. واقعيت اين است که اگر مي‌خواهيد به خوبي انگليسي صحبت کنيد، بايد کمي زندگي روزمره‌تان را تغيير دهيد. در اينجا چند نمونه از کارهايي که مي‌توانيد انجام دهيد آورده شده است:

• مي‌توانيد روزي يک ساعت يک کتاب انگليسي را مطالعه کنيد و ساختارهاي گرامري جملات را بررسي کرده و کلمات جديد را در يک ديکشنري جستجو کنيد.

• مي‌توانيد به يک منبع شنيداري (مثلاً يک نوار کاست يا يک سي‌دي mp3 و...) گوش کنيد و آن قسمت‌هايي که متوجه نمي‌شويد را آنقدر تکرار کنيد تا آنچه گفته مي‌شود را کاملا درک کنيد.

• مي‌توانيد يک ايميل به انگليسي بنويسيد و مرتباً از يک ديکشنري استفاده کنيد و يا در اينترنت به جستجو بپردازيد تا مطمئن شويد تمام کلمات به درستي به کار برده شده‌اند.

• هنگاميکه در خيابان مشغول قدم زدن هستيد درباره آن چيزهايي که مي‌بينيد با خودتان به انگليسي صحبت کنيد.

 به نظر شما چه کسي مي‌تواند اين کارهاي ظاهراً عجيب و غيرعادي را انجام دهد؟ فقط کسي که از انجام دادن آنها لذت مي‌برد. اگر مي‌خواهيد به خوبي انگليسي بياموزيد، بايستي به همين شکل عمل کنيد. مشکل اينجاست که همه‌ي زبان‌آموزها مي‌خواهند خيلي خوب به انگليسي صحبت کنند، اما بيشتر آنها نمي‌خواهند براي فراگيري آن (در تنهايي) وقت صرف کنند. کمبود انگيزه باعث مي‌شود که زبان‌آموز حاضر نشود از وقت آزاد خود براي فراگيري زبان استفاده کند و يا اگر هم وقت مي‌گذارد، نمي‌تواند بطور پيوسته و منظم آن را ادامه دهد.

يادگيري انگليسي ( يا هر زبان ديگري ) يك فرايند است. شما به طور مداوم در انگليسي پيشرفت مي كنيد. با به كار بستن نكته هاي زير مي توانيد به طور موثرتري پيشرفت كنيد.

1- يادتان باشد كه يادگيري زبان يك فرايند تدريجي است و يك شبه اتفاق نمي افتد.

2- اهداف يادگيري تان را از همان ابتدا مشخص كنيد: چه چيزي مي خواهيد ياد بگيريد و چرا؟

3- يادگيري را براي خودتان به صورت عادت در آوريد. سعي كنيد هر روز چيزي ياد بگيريد. خيلي بهتر است روزي 10 دقيقه مطالعه كنيد (يا اخبار انگليسي را بخوانيد، گوش دهيد، و ...) تا اينكه هفته اي يك بار 2 ساعت مطالعه كنيد.

4- يادتان باشد كه خودتان را به يادگيري عادت بدهيد! اگر روزي 10 دقيقه مطالعه كنيد، انگليسي به طور مداوم در ذهن تان خواهد بود اما اگر هفته اي يك مرتبه مطالعه كنيد، انگليسي به آن ميزان در ذهن تان نخواهد بود.

5- منابع آموزشي خودتان را خوب انتخاب كنيد. برنامه شما مي بايست خواندن، گرامر، نوشتن، صحبت كردن، و گوش كردن را در بر بگيرد.

نکته های طلایی در یادگیری مکالمه زبان انگلیسی

یادگیری مکالمه زبان انگلیسی به شکل مطلوب، آرزوی اکثر جوانان ایرانی است. چه آنها که انگیزه خاصی برای استفاده از این توانایی دارند، مثل سفر به خارج، ادامه تحصیل یا استخدام در یک مؤسسه خارجی ویا صرفا از روی علاقه و ایجاد ارتباط با جامعه جهانی.

یادگیری مکالمه زبان انگلیسی به شکل مطلوب، آرزوی اکثر جوانان ایرانی است. چه آنها که انگیزه خاصی برای استفاده از این توانایی دارند، مثل سفر به خارج، ادامه تحصیل یا استخدام در یک مؤسسه خارجی ویا صرفا از روی علاقه و ایجاد ارتباط با جامعه جهانی.

همگان بر این اعتقاد هستند که آموزش های زبان در مدارس و دانشگاه های ایران کمکی به مکالمه نمی کند و اطلاعات مربوطه صرفا در محدوده گرامر یا ترجمه متون خلاصه می شود.

برخی از خانواده های ایرانی هم چون به سختی یادگیری زبان در بزرگسالی واقف هستند، فرزندان خود را از همان سال های ابتدایی در کلاس های ویژه ثبت نام می کنند.

اما بزرگسالان که فرصت شرکت در کلاس را داشته باشند ، همیشه به دنبال یک مرکز معتبر هستند و شاید چندین آموزشگاه را تجربه کرده باشند. اما چون صرفا در کلاس حضور به هم می رسانند و وقتی برای تمرین های هفتگی و مطالعه قبل از کلاس نمی گذارند، عملا به جایی نمی رسند.

برخی نیز که کار و شغل روزمره اجازه حضور در کلاس را نمی دهد، با خرید انواع کتاب ها و نوارها ، تصمیم می گیرند که در منزل یا خودرو ، شخصا اقدام به یادگیری کنند که چون اجبار و ضرب العجلی برایشان نیست، به مرور از خیر این شیوه می گذرند و مجموعه ای از کتاب و سی دی و نوار روی دستشان می ماند.

Here are the direction words that are most frequently used by teachers when they write essay test items.  The meaning of each direction word is provided and is followed by an example of an essay test item using that direction word. Get to know what each of these direction words tells you to do.

The Ten Study Habits of Successful Students

Successful students have good study habits.  They apply these habits to all of their classes.  Read about each study habit.  Work to develop any study habit you do not have.

Successful students:

1. Try not to do too much studying at one time.
   
   If you try to do too much studying at one time, you will tire and your studying will not be very effective.  Space the work you have to do over shorter periods of time.  Taking short breaks will restore your mental energy. 

Useful Spelling Rules

Correct spelling is very difficult for many students because the spellings of many words do not follow rules.

Even when rules apply to the spellings of words:

• There are many rules to be learned.
• Many of the rules are very complicated.
• Many of the rules apply to a small number of words.
• Almost every rule has exceptions.

Still, there are some rules that apply to the spellings of words with few exceptions, and that are not difficult to learn and remember.  Learning and using these rules can improve your spelling.

Here are eight spelling rules you should learn and use.

1. A word that ends with the sound of “v” is spelled with the letters “ve” at its end.
   *Examples:  shave, above, effective
   
   

Managing Your Study Time

There are only so many hours in a day, a week, and a term. You cannot change the number of hours, but you can decide how to best use them. To be successful in school, you must carefully manage your study time. Here is a strategy for doing this.

Prepare a Term Calendar

At the beginning of a term, prepare a Term Calendar. Update it as the term goes on. Here is what to do to prepare a Term Calendar.

- Record your school assignments with their due dates and your scheduled tests.
- Record your planned school activities.
- Record your known out-of-school activities.

These clues will help you to find their meanings; then you will better understand what you are reading. There are many ways to help you guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from the context. Read the explanation below and study the examples.

1. Definition . تعریف
A definition gives the meaning of words. The writer may use words, phrases, or statements to define something. The writer will use key words, or signal words to identify a definition so you need to look for them. See examples of key words below.

1. Inflation is a rise in the general level of prices you pay for things you buy.

2. Someone who explores and studies caves is known as a spelunker.
